¡®Beijing Olympic Forest Park is a large city park in China that fully adopts the reclaimed water as the water replenishing source for the water system and the main scenery for the first time.¡¯ said Hu Jie, the chief designer of Beijing Olympic Forest Park. The park was designed under the guide of the world¡¯s most advanced environmental friendly concepts to realize the comprehensive utilization of the water system, which is a remarkable characteristic.
¡®We piloted 2,600 tons of regenerated water from Qinghe Sewage Treatment Plant and extracted 20,000 tons of water from the lake every day, which are then treated through biologically efficient compound wet land. It will then save 950,000 tons of running water every year. In other words, it is equivalent to the yearly water consumption of 31,600 people in Beijing.¡¯ Hu Jie said during the feature interview of ¡®Green Beijing greeting Olympic Games¡¯ as sponsored by 2008 Beijing International Media Center.
According to Hu, the park can collect 95% of the rain water in the park through various ways, which accumulates to about 1.34 million tons. The water will then be used in the park irrigation and road spraying through intelligentized irrigating system, which may save 1 million tons of water each year. Meanwhile, the park converts the toilet sewage and dry sticks and leaves into biologically efficient fertilizer for park maintenance for the first time, which has been listed as an important project of the national ¡®eleventh five-year plan¡¯.
Hu also remarked that over 100 varieties of arbors, 80 varieties of shrubs and 102 varieties of cover plants in the park form a near-the-nature forest system, with the green coverage ratio reaching 67%. It is estimated that it will produce 5,400 tons of oxygen and absorb 32 tons of sulfur dioxide and 4,905 tons of tree dust.
Located to the northern part of Beijing Olympic Park, Beijing Olympic Forest Park is important background scenery of the central Olympic area. During the Beijing Olympics, it will be the leisure spot for the delegates and athletes from around the world and the Olympic committee officials. After the Beijing Olympics, it will be made open to the public and become the largest public park in Beijing.
